Spot History

Since 1914, the Spot has been serving the best hamburgers in Southern California. Legend has it that the Spot was one of the Julia Child's favorite burger places! The Spot's original location has served hearty appetites since workers first camped out nearby when completing Highway 101.

Originally called "Sheri's Cafe", Garnet and Cecil Henderson bought what was then literally a shack with an indoor counter and six stools. They renamed the shack in 1958 and called it "The Spot".

When Ted and Della Barrajas took over the Spot in the 1970's, they expanded the menu to include Mexican Food. The traditional Mexican still served today is based on recipes that had been in their families for generations.

Today, Jessie and Teresa Bustillos carry on the traditions of The Spot. They continue to be committed to selling the finest and freshest Hamburgers, Sandwiches and Mexican food. By popular demand, the menu has been expanded to include California Beach Seafood including Fish, Shrimp, Clam Strips, and Clam Chowder Sourdough Bowls!

Historic Carpinteria

Legend has it that the city got its name because the Spanish Conquistadors saw the Chumash Native Americans building large wooden ocean-going canoes called "tomols" and called it 'the carpenter' - La Carpinteria.

Carpinteria was ideally suited for ocean-going canoe building because of the availability of the natural occurring surface tar found in the area which was used to seal the boats. Today, you can still see this tar oozing from the earth from the bluffs located in the Tar Pits Park.

Today, Carpinteria is known for its calm beach, tide pools and the Salt March Reserve, known as El Estuaro. The Salt March Reserve is one of the most important wetlands in Southern California. The wetland provides habitat for migratory waterfowl as well as species of plants and animals listed as endangered or of special concern. The Reserve is also an important regional nursery for California  halibut and other species of fish.

Carpinteria is also home to the annual California Avocado festival hosted each year during the first week of October. Featuring of the largest bowls of guacamole, the Carpinteria Avocado Festival is California's third largest festival drawing over 100,000 people!
